Death of the Majors

A new trend has started forming in the current downfall of the the music business as we know it.

Major labels, including Island Def Jam and Sony BMG, have started laying off employees. Both those labels did it earlier this month. The most recent labels to follow suit are Geffen and Interscope. As many 15 employees lost jobs on Thursday. Supposedly, according to one source, Perez, the two labels have merged. This is another event that's become more frequent.

The biggest reason for the cutting back at major labels is the decrease in record sales. Please don't ask why record sales are low, there's several different reasons and they vary depending on who you ask.

Supposedly, the music biz is falling because of the Internet, illegal downloading and such. However, I've never seen so many bands floating around at the same time. Not to mention how artists from independent labels have some how snuck themselves on the Hot Billboard 100. How did this happen? Hey, guess what. Interent is to blame yet again. Myspace and such.

So people are calling the layoffs part of the "death of the music industry." I don't think it's really the death at all. Music is still a thriving area of life.
